The National Alliance for Advanced Technology Batteries (NAATB) awarded the General Motors brand to achieve the Golden Spike award tribute to appreciate this vehicle brand effort to create one of the new modern, mainstream electric vehicle to be marketed and go public with published the 2011 Chevrolet Volt. This award was given by NATTB to General Motors at the private annual meeting of NATTB. Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear who was honored this award to General Motors.

The General Motors teams consist of engineers, scientists, and designers were working together with LG Chem in order to extend the innovative of lithium-ion battery system which created the concept of the Chevrolet Volt to be real. The modern battery management system which is applied on this car could handle until the maximum electric driving range of this car and assure that it could work well and the thing which could believe on.

The golden spike award is followed the golden railroad spikes award which were awarded to the Union Pacific Railroad and Central Pacific Railroad when the journey tracks from the east to the west and then met exactly on Promontory Summit in the Utah Territory that presented on May 10 1869. This event created the beginning way of modern railroad age with the closing of the first inter-continent rail line.

This gold-plated, for the seven-inch spike is written with "In Commemoration of the launch of the First Plug-in electric Vehicles in United States" and "May this Spike Mark the Beginning of a New Transportation Age – the Age of electric Vehicles".

James Greenberger, as the executive Director of National Alliance for Advanced Technology Batteries stated that this awards one day will be looked as a historic as the same as the history which is carved of the first inter-continent railroad.
